Frequently Asked Questions

What is Wyland?

Wyland is a cooperative multiplayer browser game where you play as a traveler exploring a vast, fog-covered world. Light mysteriously follows you, revealing terrain as you walk. You can link your light with nearby players to see further together.

Is Wyland free to play?

Yes. Wyland is completely free. You just need a Google account to sign in.

How does multiplayer work?

When you join a world, you explore alongside other players in real time. You can see their lights moving through the fog. Public worlds are open to everyone; private worlds use a shareable code so only invited players can join.

What is light linking?

When two players move within a few tiles of each other, their lights automatically link. This triples the visible radius for both players, revealing much more of the surrounding terrain. Links break when you move too far apart.

What are dark waypoints?

Most of the 30 waypoints start in darkness — you have to physically walk to them to reveal them. Each waypoint has a unique name and an inscription. Discovering all 30 is one of the core goals of exploration.

What is the journal?

The journal is your personal logbook. It automatically records every waypoint, wildlife species, mineral, ruin, and fish you discover. You can also compose your own notes. Progress is tracked per world.

Does my progress save?

Your fog-of-war progress is saved locally in your browser for each world you visit. Your journal discoveries and profile (username, light color) are stored on the server and persist across sessions.

Can I play on mobile?

Wyland is designed for desktop browsers. Mobile support is limited — the game uses keyboard controls for movement, so a physical keyboard is recommended for the best experience.

How are worlds generated?

Each world is procedurally generated from a numeric seed using multi-octave value noise. The same seed always produces the same terrain, so every player in the same world sees identical geography — forests, rivers, mountains, and snow biomes.

Can I create a private world?

Yes. From the home screen, switch to the Private tab and click "Create Private World." You will receive a unique world code (like "ember-drift") that you can share with friends so they can join.
